The Backwater Duck Club was founded in the fall of 2003 in Cobleskill, NY. Two fellow wildlife students, Rick Murphy and Ron Zega, who both shared the same interest in waterfowl, went on their first duck hunt together. Both had gunned waterfowl in the past, but the duo's addiction grew worse and worse with every trip to the old wooded swamp. Many classroom hours were sacrificed to spend a full day knelt under an old dead tree killing ducks. Although both spent hours in the swamp that fall, college was a success and they both received their Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Management. Murphy went on to do his internship for Delta Waterfowl in North Dakota working with ducks. Zega ventured to the Arctic Circle to work with a colony of Snows, Ross's and Whitefronts. Both came back with many stories that only fueled their waterfowl addiction. The following season Murphy, Zega and Brian "B-Man" Haslun honed their duck skills and began consistently killing limits of ducks. That same season Arliss "Cuz" Reed, a young buck still working on his wildlife degree, tagged along on a dynamite all day hunt in an icy swamp in a pair of waders four sizes too small. After surviving, he was invited into the Backwater Duck Club. The crew began killing both ducks and geese the following season. In the fall of 2006 Carl Cranker and Chris Davanzo began hunting with the club, making a group of misfits that would get up at any hour anywhere to kill ducks and geese. The Backwater Duck Club was given its name after the club’s mentality to go as far back in as you can to get away from the crowds to kill ducks. The club will roll on like a freight train into its fifth season in 2007...turning any innocent duck or goose in their path into sausage.
